Establishing an Effective Quiet Time

Okay, be honest. How many times in the last seven days have you had an effective, planned, quiet-time with the Lord? Are you reading the Bible on your own, or are you reading what others say about the Bible? Do you have a written prayer list? Are you using it?

If you are like many other believers, establishing and keeping a disciplined, effective quiet-time is a real struggle. Many of us have simply thrown up our hands in frustration and quit trying. Others of us have lowered and dumbed down the bar to assuage the sense of failure: maybe your prayer time consists of the blessing over the meal, or a wish list while driving to work. Maybe your study time is nothing more than Daily Bread, and if you were really honest, you don't even look up the verse in your Bible. I am not talking about becoming a "devotional legalist." I am not talking about a new law of Moses. I am talking about a basic pursuit of Christ, about longing for the "milk of the Word," about "praying without ceasing."
